Functional convergence underground? The scale‐dependency of community assembly processes in European cave spiders

AbstractAimQuantifying the relative contribution of environmental filtering versus limiting similarity in shaping communities is challenging because these processes often act simultaneously and their effect is scale‐dependent. Focusing on caves, island‐like natural laboratories with limited environmental variability and species diversity, we tested: (i) the relative contribution of environmental filtering and limiting similarity in determining community assembly in caves; (ii) how the relative contribution of these driving forces changes along environmental gradients.LocationEurope.Time periodPresent.Major taxa studiedSubterranean spiders.MethodsWe used data on distribution and traits for European cave spiders (n = 475 communities). We estimated the trait space of each community using probabilistic hypervolumes, and obtained estimations of functional richness independent of the species richness of each community via null modelling. We model functional diversity change along environmental gradients using generalized dissimilarity modelling.ResultsSixty‐three percent of subterranean spider communities exhibited a prevalence of trait underdispersion. However, most communities displayed trait dispersion that did not depart significantly from random, suggesting that environmental filtering and limiting similarity were both exerting equally weak or strong, yet opposing influences. Overdispersed communities were primarily concentrated in southern latitudes, particularly in the Dinaric karst, where there is greater subterranean habitat availability. Pairwise comparisons of functional richness across caves revealed these effects to be strongly scale‐dependent, largely varying across gradients of cave development, elevation, precipitation, entrance size and annual temperature range. Conversely, geographical distance weakly affected trait composition, suggesting convergence in traits among communities that are far apart.Main conclusionsEven systems with stringent environmental conditions maintain the potential for trait differentiation, especially in areas of greater habitat availability. Yet, the relative influence of environmental filtering and limiting similarity change with scale, along clear environmental gradients. The interplay of these processes may explain the assembly of species‐poor subterranean communities displaying high functional specialization.

Residual effects of chlorinated organic pollutants on microbial community and natural redox processes in coastal wetlands

Chlorinated organic pollutants (COPs) are common in flooded environments. To examine the residual status and effects of COPs on flooded environments, a survey of 7 coastal wetlands in Zhejiang, East China was conducted. Total COP concentrations detected from 95.69 to 412.76 ng g-1 dw. Gamma-HCH and o,p'-DDT posed the greatest risk with exceedance rates of 100% according to sediment quality guidelines. Samples with higher COP pollution had higher microbial diversity, more complex microbial networks, more deterministic community assembly processes and lower microbiome stability, indicating an improved soil function for balance cycle of substances, especially for COP degradation. Further analysis using quantitative real-time PCR suggested COP-dechlorination interacted with natural redox processes, especially sulfate reduction and methanogenesis. The positive correlation between CH4 and pentachlorobenzene indicated a potential increase in greenhouse gas emissions caused by COP pollution. Correlation between dsr gene and COPs demonstrated the ability of sulfate-reducing bacteria to degrade COPs. Particularly, facultative OHRB such as sulfate-reducing bacteria hold significant importance in the process of COP-dechlorination. This finding provides a reference for COP pollution remediation. Collectively, our study offers new insight into the residual effect of COPs in coastal wetlands and contributes to an improved understanding of bioremediation strategies for COP pollution.

Resilience of tropical invertebrate community assembly processes to a gradient of land use intensity

Understanding how community assembly processes drive biodiversity patterns is a central goal of community ecology. While it is generally accepted that ecological communities are assembled by both stochastic and deterministic processes, quantifying their relative importance remains challenging. Few studies have investigated how the relative importance of stochastic and deterministic community assembly processes vary among taxa and along gradients of habitat degradation. Using data on 1645 arthropod species across seven taxonomic groups in Malaysian Borneo, we quantified the importance of ecological stochasticity and of a suite of community assembly processes across a gradient of logging intensity. The relationship between logging and community assembly varied depending on the specific combination of taxa and stochasticity metric used, but, in general, the processes that govern invertebrate community assembly were remarkably robust to changes in land use intensity.

Different Responses of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungal Community Compositions in the Soil and Roots to Nitrogen Deposition in a Subtropical Cunninghamia lanceolata Plantation in China

Elevated nitrogen (N) deposition may stimulate a plant’s dependency on arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi in phosphorus (P)-deficient subtropical forests. However, the ecological assembly processes and the responses of AM fungal diversity and community structure to N deposition in both the roots and rhizosphere are still unclear. We collected root and soil samples from a Cunninghamia lanceolata plantation forest after four years of N addition and examined the community structure and assembly of AM fungi. Elevated N deposition decreased the AM fungal community diversity in both rhizosphere soil and roots. Glomeraceae was the dominant family of the AM fungal community in both soil and roots across all N addition treatments, followed by Gigasporaceae and Ambisporaceae. However, N addition induced differential variation in the community composition of AM fungi between soil and roots. For soil AM fungi, N addition decreased the Glomeraceae abundance and increased the Gigasporaceae and Ambisporaceae abundance. In contrast, the root AM fungal community was dominated by Glomeraceae under N addition treatments. Furthermore, N addition increased the deterministic community assembly that acted as an environmental filter for soil AM fungi. In contrast, N addition decreased the importance of determinism, implying that the selection of plants on root AM fungi decreased with increasing N addition. Altogether, our findings suggest that the community structure of AM fungi responds differently to N deposition in the soil and roots in subtropical forests and highlight the important role of soil AM fungi in helping host plants respond to N deposition.

Linking functional composition moments of the sub-Mediterranean ecotone with environmental drivers.

Functional trait-based approaches are extensively applied to the study of mechanisms governing community assembly along environmental gradients. These approaches have been classically based on studying differences in mean values among species, but there is increasing recognition that alternative metrics of trait distributions should be considered to decipher the mechanisms determining community assembly and species coexistence. Under this framework, the main aim of this study is to unravel the effects of environmental conditions as drivers of plant community assembly in sub-Mediterranean ecotones. We set 60 plots in six plant communities of a sub-Mediterranean forest in Central Spain, and measured key above- and belowground functional traits in 411 individuals belonging to 19 species, along with abiotic variables. We calculated community-weighted mean (CWM), skewness (CWS) and kurtosis (CWK) of three plant dimensions, and used maximum likelihood techniques to analyze how variation in these functional community traits was driven by abiotic factors. Additionally, we estimated the relative contribution of intraspecific trait variability and species turnover to variation in CWM. The first three axes of variation of the principal component analyses were related to three main plant ecological dimensions: Leaf Economics Spectrum, Root Economics Spectrum and plant hydraulic architecture, respectively. Type of community was the most important factor determining differences in the functional structure among communities, as compared to the role of abiotic variables. We found strong differences among communities in their CWMs in line with their biogeographic origin (Eurosiberian vs Mediterranean), while differences in CWS and CWK indicate different trends in the functional structure among communities and the coexistence of different functional strategies, respectively. Moreover, changes in functional composition were primarily due to intraspecific variability. We observed a high number of strategies in the forest with the different communities spreading along the acquisitive-conservative axis of resource-use, partly matching their Eurosiberian-Mediterranean nature, respectively. Intraspecific trait variability, rather than species turnover, stood as the most relevant factor when analyzing functional changes and assembly patterns among communities. Altogether, our data support the notion that ecotones are ecosystems where relatively minor environmental shifts may result in changes in plant and functional composition.

Tillandsia landbeckii phyllosphere and laimosphere as refugia for bacterial life in a hyperarid desert environment

BackgroundThe lack of water is a major constraint for microbial life in hyperarid deserts. Consequently, the abundance and diversity of microorganisms in common habitats such as soil are strongly reduced, and colonization occurs primarily by specifically adapted microorganisms that thrive in particular refugia to escape the harsh conditions that prevail in these deserts. We suggest that plants provide another refugium for microbial life in hyperarid deserts. We studied the bacterial colonization of Tillandsia landbeckii (Bromeliaceae) plants, which occur in the hyperarid regions of the Atacama Desert in Chile, one of the driest and oldest deserts on Earth.ResultsWe detected clear differences between the bacterial communities being plant associated to those of the bare soil surface (PERMANOVA, R2 = 0.187, p = 0.001), indicating that Tillandsia plants host a specific bacterial community, not only dust-deposited cells. Moreover, the bacterial communities in the phyllosphere were distinct from those in the laimosphere, i.e., on buried shoots (R2 = 0.108, p = 0.001), indicating further habitat differentiation within plant individuals. The bacterial taxa detected in the phyllosphere are partly well-known phyllosphere colonizers, but in addition, some rather unusual taxa (subgroup2 Acidobacteriae, Acidiphilum) and insect endosymbionts (Wolbachia, “Candidatus Uzinura”) were found. The laimosphere hosted phyllosphere-associated as well as soil-derived taxa. The phyllosphere bacterial communities showed biogeographic patterns across the desert (R2 = 0.331, p = 0.001). These patterns were different and even more pronounced in the laimosphere (R2 = 0.467, p = 0.001), indicating that different factors determine community assembly in the two plant compartments. Furthermore, the phyllosphere microbiota underwent temporal changes (R2 = 0.064, p = 0.001).ConclusionsOur data demonstrate that T. landbeckii plants host specific bacterial communities in the phyllosphere as well as in the laimosphere. Therewith, these plants provide compartment-specific refugia for microbial life in hyperarid desert environments. Microbiome convergence and deterministic community assembly along successional biocrust gradients on potash salt heaps.

Potash mining, typically performed for agricultural fertilizer production, can create piles of residual salt waste that are ecologically detrimental and difficult to revegetate. Biological soil crusts (biocrusts) have been found growing on and around these heaps, suggesting resilience to the hypersaline environment. We set out to understand the community dynamics of biocrust formation by examining two succesionary salinity gradients at historical mining sites using a high throughput amplicon sequencing. Bare heaps were distinct, with little overlap between sites, and were characterized by high salinity, low nutrient availability, and specialized, low diversity microbial communities, dominated by Halobacteria, Chloroflexia, and Deinococci. 'Initial' stages of biocrust development were dominated by site-specific Cyanobacteria, with significant overlap between sites. Established biocrusts were the most diverse, with large proportions of Alphaproteobacteria, Anaerolineae, and Planctomycetacia. Along the salinity gradient at both sites, salinity decreased, pH decreased, and nutrients and Chlorophyll a increased. Microbiomes between sites converged during succession and community assembly process analysis revealed biocrusts at both sites were dominated by deterministic, niche-based processes; indicating a high degree of phylogenetic turnover. We posit early cyanobacterial colonization is essential for biocrust initiation, and facilitates later establishment of plant and other higher-level biota.

Phylogenetic distance-decay patterns are not explained by local community assembly processes in freshwater lake microbial communities.

While water and sediment microbial communities exhibit pronounced spatio-temporal patterns in freshwater lakes, the underlying drivers are yet poorly understood. Here, we evaluated the importance of spatial and temporal variation in abiotic environmental factors for bacterial and microeukaryotic community assembly and distance-decay relationships in water and sediment niches in Hongze Lake. By sampling across the whole lake during both Autumn and Spring sampling time points, we show that only bacterial sediment communities were governed by deterministic community assembly processes due to abiotic environmental drivers. Nevertheless, consistent distance-decay relationships were found with both bacterial and microeukaryotic communities, which were relatively stable with both sampling time points. Our results suggest that spatio-temporal variation in environmental factors was important in explaining mainly bacterial community assembly in the sediment, possibly due lesser disturbance. However, clear distance-decay patterns emerged also when the community assembly was stochastic. Together, these results suggest that abiotic environmental factors do not clearly drive the spatial structuring of lake microbial communities, highlighting the need to understand the role of other potential drivers, such as spatial heterogeneity and biotic species interactions.

Trait–environment relationships of hydroids (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) across large spatial and environmental gradients in the Atlantic Ocean

AbstractAimThe aim was to test trait–environment relationships in hydroids across large spatial and environmental gradients and to evaluate associations between traits, environmental variables, space and phylogeny.LocationAtlantic Ocean and adjacent polar seas.Time periodPresent day.Major taxa studiedHydrozoa.MethodsTrait–environment relationships and their spatial and phylogenetic contexts were assessed in hydroids by using a combination of a fourth‐corner test and extended‐RLQ approach, in a multivariate ordination method that uses five matrices: (1) species across sites, (2) environmental data across sites, (3) traits across species, (4) latitude and longitude for each site, and (5) phylogenetic distance among species. We based our analyses on 3680 records of 431 species distributed at 1440 sites, 16 species traits, nine environmental variables and a phylogenetic tree of the studied species.ResultsHydroid traits are significantly correlated with environmental variables and geographical space, and hydroid phylogeny is correlated with the environment and geographical space. More evidently, we observed an increased presence of larger species (taller, more branched, with greater base diameter and polysiphonic) at sites richer in nitrate and silicate, with higher dissolved oxygen, lower temperatures, lower salinities and lower current velocities. The observation of phylogenetically related species with similar traits and distributions corroborates that historical processes interact with the environment in determining community assembly and explaining patterns of distribution of species traits.Main conclusionsSeveral environmental variables combined affect the distribution of hydroid traits, which are also influenced by spatial and historical factors. In the first analysis of its kind for hydrozoans, we have provided an overview of how hydroids are distributed across environments according to their traits and revealed the spatial and phylogenetic components of these trait–environment relationships.

Interconnected versus unconnected microorganisms: Does it matter in anaerobic digestion functioning

Microorganisms in anaerobic digestion (AD) are essential for wastes/pollutants treatment and energy recovery. Due to microbial enormous diversity, developing effective perspectives to understand microbial roles therein is urgent. This study conducted AD of swine manure, used an ensemble-based network analysis to distinguish interconnected, unconnected, copresence (positively interconnected) and mutual-exclusion (negatively interconnected) microorganisms within microbial communities, and explored their importance towards AD performances, using amplicon sequencing of 16S rRNA and 16S rRNA gene. Our analyses revealed greater importance of interconnected than unconnected microorganisms towards CH4 production and AD multifunctionality, which was attributed to higher niche breadth, deterministic community assembly, community stability and phylogenetic conservatism. The diversity was higher in unconnected than interconnected microorganisms, but was not linked to AD performances. Compared to copresence microorganisms, mutual-exclusion microorganisms showed greater and equal importance towards CH4 production and AD multifunctionality, which was attributed to their roles in stabilizing microbial communities. The increased feedstock biodegradability, by replacing part of manure with fructose or apple waste, hardly affected the relative importance of interconnected versus unconnected microorganisms towards CH4 production or AD multifunctionality. Our findings develop a new framework to understand microbial roles, and have important implications in targeted manipulation of critical microorganisms in waste-treatment systems.

Ocean acidification increases the impact of typhoons on algal communities

Long-term environmental change, sudden pulses of extreme perturbation, or a combination of both can trigger regime shifts by changing the processes and feedbacks which determine community assembly, structure, and function, altering the state of ecosystems. Our understanding of the mechanisms that stabilise against regime shifts or lock communities into altered states is limited, yet also critical to anticipating future states, preventing regime shifts, and reversing unwanted state change. Ocean acidification contributes to the restructuring and simplification of algal systems, however the mechanisms through which this occurs and whether additional drivers are involved requires further study. Using monthly surveys over three years at a shallow-water volcanic seep we examined how the composition of algal communities change seasonally and following periods of significant physical disturbance by typhoons at three levels of ocean acidification (equivalent to means of contemporary ∼350 and future ∼500 and 900 μatm pCO2). Sites exposed to acidification were increasingly monopolised by structurally simple, fast-growing turf algae, and were clearly different to structurally complex macrophyte-dominated reference sites. The distinct contemporary and acidified community states were stabilised and maintained at their respective sites by different mechanisms following seasonal typhoon disturbance. Macroalgal-dominated sites were resistant to typhoon damage. In contrast, significant losses of algal biomass represented a near total ecosystem reset by typhoons for the turf-dominated communities at the elevated pCO2 sites (i.e. negligible resistance). A combination of disturbance and subsequent turf recovery maintained the same simplified state between years (elevated CO2 levels promote turf growth following algal removal, inhibiting macroalgal recruitment). Thus, ocean acidification may promote shifts in algal systems towards degraded ecosystem states, and short-term disturbances which reset successional trajectories may ‘lock-in’ these alternative states of low structural and functional diversity.

Using leaf traits to explain species co-existence and its consequences for primary productivity across a forest-steppe ecotone

Trait-based approaches have been widely applied to uncover the mechanisms determining community assembly and biodiversity-ecosystem functioning relationships. However, they have rarely been used in forest-steppe ecotones. These ecosystems are extremely sensitive to disturbances due to their relatively complex ecosystem structures, functionings and processes. In this study, we selected seven sites along a transect from closed canopy forests (CF) to forest-steppe ecotones (FSE) and meadow steppes (MS) in northeast China. Six leaf functional traits (i.e. leaf nitrogen and phosphorus contents, leaf length and thickness, single leaf area and leaf mass per unit area, LMA) as well as the community composition and aboveground biomass at each site were measured. Both functional trait diversity indices (richness, evenness and divergence) and community-weighted mean trait values (CWMs) were calculated to quantify community trait distributions. We found that dominant species in the FSE communities showed acquisitive strategies with highest leaf nitrogen (Mean ± SE: 19.6 ± 0.5 mg g−1) and single leaf area (19.2 ± 1.3 cm2), but the lowest LMA (59.6 ± 1.3 g cm−2) values compared to adjacent CF and MS communities. The ecotone communities also exhibited the largest functional trait richness (TOP), evenness (TED) and divergence (FDis) values (0.46, 0.92 and 0.67, respectively). Overall, niche differentiation emerges as the main mechanism influencing the coexistence of plant species in ecotone ecosystems. In addition, CWMs of leaf traits were the most important predictors for estimating variations in aboveground productivity across the transect, suggesting a major influence of dominant species. Our findings suggest that vegetation management practices in forest-steppe ecotones should increasingly focus on community functional trait diversity, and support the establishment and regeneration of plant species with rapid resource acquisition strategies.

A poisoned apple: First insights into community assembly and networks of the fungal pathobiome of healthy-looking senescing leaves of temperate trees in mixed forest ecosystem.

Despite the abundance of observations of foliar pathogens, our knowledge is severely lacking regarding how the potential fungal pathobiome is structured and which processes determine community assembly. In this study, we addressed these questions by analysing the potential fungal pathobiome associated with the senescing leaves and needles of 12 temperate tree species. We compared fungal plant pathogen load in the senescing leaves/needles and demonstrated that healthy-looking leaves/needles are inhabited by diverse and distinct fungal plant pathogens. We detected 400 fungal plant pathogenic ASVs belonging to 130 genera. The fungal plant pathogenic generalist, Mycosphaerella, was found to be the potential most significant contributor to foliar disease in seedlings. The analyses of assembly process and co-occurrence network showed that the fungal plant pathogenic communities in different tree types are mainly determined by stochastic processes. However, the homogenising dispersal highly contributes in broadleaf trees, whereas ecological drift plays an important role in coniferious trees. The deterministic assembly processes (dominated by variable selection) contributed more in broadleaf trees as compared to coniferous trees. We found that pH and P level significantly corresponded with fungal plant pathogenic community compositions in both tree types. Our study provides the first insight and mechanistic understanding into the community assembly, networks, and complete taxonomy of the foliar fungal pathobiome in senescing leaves and needles.

Temporal coherence patterns of prairie pothole wetlands indicate the importance of landscape linkages and wetland heterogeneity in maintaining biodiversity

Wetland ecosystems are diverse, productive habitats that are essential reservoirs of biodiversity. Not only are they home to numerous wetland-specialist species, but they also provide food, water, and shelter that support terrestrial wildlife populations. However, like observed patterns of biodiversity loss, wetland habitats have experienced widespread loss and degradation. In order to conserve and restore wetlands, and thereby the biodiversity they support, it is important to understand how biodiversity in wetland habitats is maintained. Habitat heterogeneity and connectivity are thought to be predominate drivers of wetland biodiversity. We quantified temporal coherence (i.e., spatial synchrony) of wetland invertebrate communities using intra-class correlations among 16 wetlands sampled continuously over 24 years to better understand the relative influences wetland heterogeneity (i.e., internal processes specific to individual wetlands and spatial connectivity and external processes occurring on the landscape) on wetland biodiversity. We found that while wetlands with different ponded-water regimes (temporarily ponded or permanently ponded) often hosted different invertebrate communities, temporal shifts in invertebrate composition were synchronous. We also found the relative importance of internal versus external forces in determining community assembly vary depending on a wetland’s hydrologic function and climate influences. Our results confirm that heterogeneity and spatial connectivity of wetland landscapes are important drivers of wetland biodiversity.

Microbiomes of bloom-forming Phaeocystis algae are stable and consistently recruited, with both symbiotic and opportunistic modes.

Phaeocystis is a cosmopolitan, bloom-forming phytoplankton genus that contributes significantly to global carbon and sulfur cycles. During blooms, Phaeocystis species produce large carbon-rich colonies, creating a unique interface for bacterial interactions. While bacteria are known to interact with phytoplankton-e.g., they promote growth by producing phytohormones and vitamins-such interactions have not been shown for Phaeocystis. Therefore, we investigated the composition and function of P. globosa microbiomes. Specifically, we tested whether microbiome compositions are consistent across individual colonies from four P. globosa strains, whether similar microbiomes are re-recruited after antibiotic treatment, and how microbiomes affect P. globosa growth under limiting conditions. Results illuminated a core colonial P. globosa microbiome-including bacteria from the orders Alteromonadales, Burkholderiales, and Rhizobiales-that was re-recruited after microbiome disruption. Consistent microbiome composition and recruitment is indicative that P. globosa microbiomes are stable-state systems undergoing deterministic community assembly and suggests there are specific, beneficial interactions between Phaeocystis and bacteria. Growth experiments with axenic and nonaxenic cultures demonstrated that microbiomes allowed continued growth when B-vitamins were withheld, but that microbiomes accelerated culture collapse when nitrogen was withheld. In sum, this study reveals symbiotic and opportunistic interactions between Phaeocystis colonies and microbiome bacteria that could influence large-scale phytoplankton bloom dynamics and biogeochemical cycles.

Deterministic assembly and anthropogenic extinctions drive convergence of island bird communities

AbstractAimWhether entire communities of organisms converge towards predictable structural properties in similar environmental conditions remains controversial. We tested for community convergence in birds by comparing the structure of oceanic archipelago assemblages with their respective regional species pools.LocationEighteen major oceanic archipelagos of volcanic origin with global distribution.Major taxa studiedTerrestrial birds.MethodsWe compiled a comprehensive database of morphological trait and phylogenetic data for 6,579 bird species, including species known to have become extinct owing to human activities. We quantified morphological and phylogenetic dissimilarity among species between pairs of archipelagos, using a modified version of the mean nearest taxon distance. We tested for convergence by estimating whether overall mean turnover among archipelagos and pairwise turnover between archipelagos were lower than expected by chance.ResultsFor all land birds, we found that turnover in body plan, body mass and phylogeny among archipelagos was significantly lower than expected. Seventeen (of 18) archipelagos showed significant body plan and phylogenetic similarity with at least one other archipelago. Similar convergent patterns of community assembly were detected in different subsamples of the data (extant species, endemics, native non‐endemics, and Passeriformes only). Convergence was more pronounced for extant species than for extant and extinct species combined.Main conclusionsConsistent convergence in phylogenetic and morphological structure among archipelagic communities arises through a combination of non‐random colonization andin situadaptation. In addition, by including data from extinct taxa, we show that community convergence both precedes and is accentuated by the anthropogenic extinction of endemic lineages. Our results highlight the potential role of non‐random extinction in generating patterns of community convergence and show that convergence existed even before anthropogenic extinctions, owing to deterministic community assembly in similar environmental settings at the global scale.

The effect of niche filtering on plant species abundance in temperate grassland communities

Abstract Niche filtering predicts that abundant species in communities have similar traits that are suitable for the environment. However, niche filtering can operate on distinct axes of trait variation in response to different ecological conditions. Here, we use a trait‐based approach to infer niche filtering processes and (a) test if abundant and rare species in grassland communities are differently positioned along distinct axes of trait variation, (b) determine if these trait variation axes, as well as phylogenetic and functional similarities, drive species relative abundance (above‐ground cover) within communities, and (c) explore whether these relationships vary across grassland types and macro‐climatic gradients. We analysed species abundance in vegetation plots from temperate grasslands in Central Europe as a function of species position along three axes of trait variation: the ‘Plant Size Spectrum’ (PSS), the ‘Leaf Economics Spectrum’ (LES) and the ‘Life span/Clonality Spectrum’ (LCS). We also used phylogenetic and functional similarities in the multi‐dimensional trait space as predictors of species abundance. We compared our results among alpine, wet, mesic and dry grasslands and tested whether the effect of the predictors on species abundance was significant across macro‐climatic gradients. Compared to abundant species, rare species in grassland communities were more commonly annual and non‐clonal, had lower stature and smaller leaves and seeds, and relied on more acquisitive leaf economics. Our predictors significantly explained species abundance in approximately one‐third of the plots. LES was the most important predictor across all plots, with the most prominent effect in alpine and dry grasslands and areas with more extreme temperatures. In contrast, in mesic and wet grasslands and grasslands located in warmer and less seasonal regions, species abundance was best predicted by phylogenetic similarities between species, with Poaceae species becoming more abundant. Our study explored trait–abundance relationships for different community types across a large area and broad macro‐climatic gradients. We conclude that niche filtering, and particularly resource‐acquisition trade‐offs, drives species abundance in temperate grassland communities of Central Europe. Our findings emphasize the interaction between local environmental conditions and plant function in determining community assembly. Biogeographic distribution patterns and assembly processes of nirS‐type and nirK‐type denitrifiers across the black soil zone in Northeast China

AbstractDenitrifiers controlled the key‐step on global N cycles; however, little knowledge had been focused on their biogeography and associated underlying mechanisms. Here, based on high‐throughput sequencing, we investigated the nirS‐type and nirK‐type community diversity, biogeography, assembly mechanisms, and taxa interactions with 26 soil samples that were obtained across the black soil zone of northeast China. The results revealed that Proteobacteria was the unique known phylum of denitrifying bacteria, and Bradyrhizobium was the most abundant genus detected in both nirS‐type and nirK‐type denitrifiers across all soil samples. Compared with nirS‐type denitrifiers, a relatively high cosmopolitan and community diversity were found in nirK‐type. Those two types of denitrifying communities showed clear geographic distribution accompanied by obvious distance‐decay relationships. Variance partitioning analysis revealed that soil properties rather than sampling latitudes significantly influenced denitrifying communities with soil pH as the key drivers. However, stochastic processes, as dispersal limitation, played a greater role than deterministic processes in determining community assembly of both nirS‐type and niK‐type denitrifiers. This dispersal limitation was mostly contributed by the potential competition among taxa, with the negative interactions dominating in the denitrifying co‐occurrence patterns. Moreover, soil acidification with soil pH ranking from 4.0 to 4.5 simplified network structure and compelled denitrifiers to cooperate with each other in contrast to other soil pH ranges. These results provided comprehensive insights into the ecological processes of denitrifying communities, which were of great importance to the improvement of agricultural ecosystem services from the perspective of microorganisms.

Determinism of microbial community assembly by drastic environmental change.

Microbial community assembly is shaped by deterministic and stochastic processes, but the relationship between these processes and the environment is not understood. Here we describe a rule for the determinism and stochasticity of microbial community assembly affected by the environment using in silico, in situ, and ex situ experiments. The in silico experiment with a simple mathematical model showed that the existence of essential symbiotic microorganisms caused stochastic microbial community assembly, unless the community was exposed to a non-adapted nutritional concentration. Then, a deterministic assembly occurred due to the low number of microorganisms adapted to the environment. In the in situ experiment in the middle of a river, the microbial community composition was relatively deterministic after the drastic environmental change caused by the treated wastewater contamination, as analyzed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Furthermore, by culturing microbial communities collected from the upstream natural area and downstream urban area of the river in test tubes with varying carbon source concentrations, the upstream community assembly became deterministic with high carbon concentrations while the downstream community assembly became deterministic with low carbon concentrations. These results suggest that large environmental changes, which are different from the original environment, result in a deterministic microbial community assembly.

Climate warming promotes deterministic assembly of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal communities.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) significantly contribute to plant resource acquisition and play important roles in mediating plant interactions and soil carbon (C) dynamics. However, it remains unclear how AMF communities respond to climate change. We assessed impacts of warming and precipitation alterations (30% increase or decrease) on soil AMF communities, and examined major ecological processes shaping the AMF community assemblage in a Tibetan alpine meadow. Our results showed that warming significantly increased root biomass, and available nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in soil. While precipitation alterations increased AMF abundances, they did not significantly affect the composition or diversity of AMF communities. In contrast, warming altered the composition of AMF communities and reduced their Shannon-Wiener index and Pielou's evenness. In particular, warming shifted the AMF community composition in favor of Diversisporaceae over Glomeraceae, likely through its impact on soil N and P availability. In addition, AMF communities were phylogenetically random in the unwarmed control but clustered in warming plots, implying more deterministic community assembly under climate warming. Warming enhancement of root growth, N and P availability likely reduced plant C-allocation to AMF, imposing stronger environmental filtering on AMF communities. We further proposed a conceptual framework that integrates biological and geochemical processes into a mechanistic understanding of warming and precipitation changes' effects on AMF. Taken together, these results suggest that soil AMF communities may be more sensitive to warming than expected, highlighting the need to monitor their community structure and associated functional consequences on plant communities and soil C dynamics under the future warmer climate.
